The 2020 AAGPS Athletics carnival was held under unprecedented conditions on the 1st and 2nd of August as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. For the first time in its 125-year history, there were no spectators permitted at the carnival, and the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions were held as separate carnivals over the two days.

Despite these challenges, the Joeys team led by Captain William Maffey and the other senior athletes of which for some, this was their sixth AAGPS Athletics Carnival, achieved some outstanding results across the weekend.

The Senior and Intermediate Athletics teams had a number of great performances which included Will Maffey and Sean Mackenzie winning the Open Long jump and High jump respectively. Ethan Quintana put in an impressive run in the U16’s 100m championship, and went on to win in 11.50 seconds.

The U16 4x100m team had a wonderful race and despite finishing 2nd, broke the SJC record. Other outstanding efforts included the Senior 4x400m relay team whose gutsy performance, showed true sportsmanship and fortitude, and earned them an outstanding 2nd place.

It was an exciting day for all of the boys in the Junior Athletics team. For many of these young athletes, this was the first occasion that they have competed at an AAGPS event. All of the boys pushed well beyond the finish line and came together as one, to deliver an outstanding team performance. The determination and fortitude demonstrated by all the boys, saw the team go on to win the Junior Championship for the first time in 25 years.

There were a number of impressive individual performances across the team which included Oli Neate, Leon Schouten, Billy Blair, Max Palmisani, Matt Gough, Lucas Arnautovic and Tomas Moloney winning their events. Of these results, Billy Blair broke the GPS record in both the U13 100m and 90m hurdles as well as Oli Neate, and Leon Schouten breaking SJC College records.

These wonderful results are a true reflection of the team spirit and support that all of the boys displayed for one another. All Members of the SJC Athletics team should be commended for the determination they showed throughout the season as well as the resolve they demonstrated on the day.
